S.
M. Sohail Trust is named after a legal luminary
of Karachi, who was an active participant in
the freedom movement as President of provincial
Muslim League and also President of Bihar Relief
Fund. After 1947, he became Secretary of the
Pakistan Bar Council, founding Managing Director
of Karachi Co-operative Housing Union and Chairman
Public Accounts Committee of West Pakistan Assembly.
He was an ardent advocate of education and founded
Sharfabad English School.
In
1997, the Trust established the School of Nursing
at Medicare Hospital, which has consistently
shown good results in board examinations. In
1998, the Trust established Jinnah Medical and
Dental College, admitting its first batch of
MBBS students. In 1999, the Dental Section was
established and admitted its first batch of
BDS students. In 2003, the Department of Pharmacy
was established which offers Doctor of Pharmacy
degrees.
The
Trust has built a teaching hospital in the Korangi
Industrial Area for low-income residents. This
not-for-profit hospital is ideal for training
of undergraduate and post-graduate students.
The Out Patient Department of the hospital opened
to the public in 2002 and inpatient services
were available from April 2003.
The Trust has also acquired land in a katchi
abadi in Landhi where a Primary Health Care
(PHC) center will be constructed. Its location
is ideal for a PHC unit from which out-reach
services will spread out into the community.
This will provide a firm basis for community
health activities since Community Oriented Medical
Education (COME) is an important part of the
Trust's mission statement.
The Trust has offered an average of 50 scholarships
each year to medical and dental students. These
scholarships are given to meritorious, deserving
candidates. The Trust also provides stipends,
uniforms and tuition for all its nursing students.
