The
main Jinnah Medical & Dental College
building has six floors. Accounts Department
is located in the basement. The Dean's Office,
Boardroom, Student Affairs and Administrative
offices are located on the ground floor. The
air-conditioned Auditorium with a seating
capacity of 300 is located on the first floor
and is equipped with a multimedia system and
a modern audio-visual system. The Dental Section
is located on the second floor and consists
of outpatient clinics, Dental Laboratories,
Dental Museum and two lecture halls. Two more
lecture halls and seven seminar rooms are
located on the third floor.
The
Basic Sciences building is
a five story building. Basic Sciences laboratories
and faculty offices are located on the ground
floor. There are 3 large lecture halls and four
seminar rooms on the first floor. The various
Dental OPD clinics and Dental Faculty offices
are on the second floor. The third floor houses
more basic sciences laboratories, dissection
hall, museums, faculty offices and preparation
rooms. The whole of the fourth floor (7000 square
feet) has been designated as the student lounge,
which includes a badminton court and cafeteria.
There is ample space for rest and relaxation
for both students and faculty.
The
previously named Medicare Hospital building
is a seven floor building which is now being
reconstructed into a modern complex for the
development new facilities. Pharmacy department
laboratories, museum and faculty offices are
located on the third floor. The main JMDC Library
is on the ground floor.

Attached
Hospitals
Jinnah
Medical College Hospital (JMCH),
located in Korangi Industrial Area, presently
has 300 beds with plans to increase the facilities
to accommodate 500 beds. Clinical training
of undergraduate students takes place at JMDC
with future plans to develop post-graduate
training programs as well. The hospital is
operated on a low cost basis and subsidized
by S.M. Sohail Trust. In addition to secondary
and tertiary care, this hospital is the nexus
for primary health care needs of the entire
population of the area.
A
well equipped Casualty/Emergency provides
24 hours service, manned by trained staff
able to deal with emergencies and backed up
by a large team of competent, experienced
consultants in various specialties.
Out-Patient
and In-Patient care is available in all Medical
and Surgical departments. A 10-bed Intensive
Care Unit is available for cases needing close
monitoring and special care. All ICU beds
have modern cardiac monitors, central oxygen
and suction system, electronic respirators,
defibrillators and electronically controlled
infusion pumps. An experienced, highly-qualified
Anesthesiologist is In-charge of the I.C.U.
and available at all times.
There
are four modern, fully equipped Operation
Theatres for various surgical procedures.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology department has
a fully equipped Labor Room and a separate
Operation Theatre. The Pediatric Department
has its own Intensive Care Unit as well as
a Nursery equipped with incubators.
Clinical
faculty is supported by well-equipped modern
Laboratory, Radiology and Ultrasound departments
which provide 24-hour services. There is a
fully stocked pharmacy and physiotherapy services
available.

The
JMDC Dental Hospital is on
the second floor of the college building and
includes the following departments: Oral Surgery,
Operative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics
and Orthodontics. Patients receive quality treatment
for a very nominal registration fee.
Lady
Dufferin Hospital is
affiliated with Jinnah Medical and Dental
College for training of undergraduate students
in gynecology, obstetrics and neonatology.
Lady Dufferin Hospital (LDH), established
over 100 years ago, is the largest hospital
in Pakistan exclusively for women. A new wing
has been inaugurated to increase the strength
to 300 beds. Through extensive facilities,
LDH has gained a respected reputation as an
institute and is already imparting training
to graduate students for FCPS and MRCOG. The
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan,
as well as the Royal College of Gynecologists,
England, recognize the hospital.
Student
Accommodation
Private
hostel facilities are available. Flats within
close range of the JMDC campus are easily available
for rent by students wishing to make their own
arrangements. JMDC is centrally located, with
public transport easily available from most
parts of Karachi.
Cafeteria
and Student Lounge
A
large area has been allocated to cater for
the staff and students. The cafeteria serves
snacks and meals all day. There is a badminton
court, as well as table-tennis tables, board
games and carom boards. This provides a healthy
outlet for students and helps them maintain
a healthy mental and physical shape which
is crucial in becoming a good doctor.

Extra
Curricular Activities
JMDC
encourages students to be involved in extra
curricular activities such as sports, debates,
drama, music, art and creative writing to
broaden and complete their education. The
committee for extracurricular affairs coordinates
activities initiated and administered by students.
The
college currently has two monthly news papers
both in English and Urdu. Students and Faculty
are encouraged to submit original articles
on topics current in medicine and dentistry
as well as other matters of general interest.
The students have also published the first
Annual Magazine for the years 1998-2001. The
annual picnic and Annual Function are two
of the most awaited occasions.
JMDC
excels in sports as well. The Inter college
cricket tournaments and Faculty versus Students
annual match are significant events to participate
in. Besides cricket, the JMDC badminton team
is one of the most talented teams in Karachi.
This is due to the indoor badminton court
which is located in the students lounge area.
JMDC also has a football team which plays
regularly in tournaments throughout Karachi.

Learning
Resources
The
anatomy and pathology museums are equipped
with dissected, labeled specimens of the body,
including both normal and diseased. There
are gross anatomy and embryology models to
aid in visualizing the three-dimensions of
real life. A collection of charts depicts
various organs. There is also a well-stocked
bone bank to aid student understanding.
The
audio-visual department has a large collection
of educational videocassettes and CD's that
can be shown on a large screen television
or projector for a larger audience. An Internet
link is available to acquire information from
cyberspace.
Library
The main library is
located at the Shaheed-e-Millat campus, with
a smaller library at the Jinnah Medical
College Hospital
premises. The main library is open from 9:00
AM to 8:00 PM Monday to Friday, and 9:00 AM
to 6:00 PM on Saturday. The Hospital library
is open Monday to Saturday 8:30 AM to 4:30
PM. In addition to text books, a large number
of local and international subscription journals
are available. There are several reference
volumes as well as a wide range of recently
published books covering various topics in
each of the basic and special medical sciences,
as well as subjects of general interest. Qualified
librarians are available to guide students
in making the best use of available library
resources.
