Introduction
In order to bring about innovative development in educational strategies, integrated curriculum and assessment methodologies Faculty development has become an increasingly important component of medical education. Certificate program in Health Professions Education (CHPE) of Sohail University, is an integrated program in which learners will learn about nuances of teaching and assessment of all the three domains of learning, i.e. knowledge, psychomotor skills and affects. CHPE program is one of the requirements of PMDC for promotion to a higher level. The CHPE program of JMDC is affiliated with Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU).
Rational for CHPE
In view of the evolving demands of medical education, there is a growing need for faculty development programs that ensure alignment with competency-based curricula, integrated instructional strategies, and effective assessment practices across cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective domains. The CHPE program addresses this need by equipping participants with the essential knowledge and skills required for effective teaching, learning, and assessment in health professions education. It also supports the development of reflective practice through structured feedback mechanisms, thereby promoting continuous professional growth and improvement in educational delivery. Furthermore, the program aligns with regulatory and accreditation requirements, including those of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), which recognizes formal training in health professions education as a requirement for academic progression

The CHPE program at JMDC is designed to prepare skilled educators in Health Professions Education (HPE), with a focus on curriculum development, teaching and learning strategies, and assessment practices

The CHPE program at JMDC is affiliated with Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), ensuring academic rigor, standardization, and quality assurance in faculty development.`
Course Duration
It is a 6-month blended course with 3 face-to-face contact sessions of five days each along with an asynchronous digital learning component.

Learner-centered, interactive.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply core principles of health professions education in teaching, curriculum development, and assessment. They will demonstrate effective facilitation skills, utilize feedback for learner development, employ learner-centered teaching strategies, and contribute to quality improvement in medical education through evidence-based practices.
Target Participants
Teaching faculty from medical and allied health sciences, including medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists and nurses.
Eligibility for Obtaining Certificate in MHPE
- Passing all the face-to-face sessions
- Timely submissions of all the assignment
- Obtaining minimum of 60% in aggregate score
- Minimum attendance of 90% in face-to-face sessions otherwise remedial assignments have to be submitted
Pass/Fail Policy
Any candidate obtaining less than 60% marks i.e. in the cumulative exam (40 %) and assignments (60%) will be considered as fail. There is no re sit exam. The candidate failing will have to repeat the whole program.
Breakup of marks
- End of Certificate exam: 40%
- Total Assignments:60%
- Each assignment per module=20
Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment will be conducted throughout the program to support learning and provide ongoing feedback to participants.
Summative Assessment:
The summative assessment will consist of graded modular assignments and an End-of-Course Examination comprising Structured Essay Questions (SEQs) designed to evaluate participants’ achievement of the program learning outcomes.

Certification Requirements
To successfully complete the program, participants must obtain a minimum aggregate score of 60%. No re-sit examination will be offered. Participants who do not meet the minimum passing requirement will be required to repeat the entire program.

Course Modules
The course consists of three modules
Module 1 : Teching & Learning
The aim of the teaching and learning module is to equip the teaching faculty with innovative teaching and learning methodologies, interactive strategies and judicious use of technology to enhance learner engagement.
By the end of the module, participants will be able to:
- Apply principles of andragogy (adult learning) to educational practices.
- Describe major learning theories and their application in health professions education.
- Demonstrate effective teaching skills across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.
- Integrate modern educational strategies, including interactive and learner-centered approaches, in their teaching practice.
- Develop effective lesson plans aligned with intended learning outcomes.
- Facilitate small-group learning sessions such as problem-based learning (PBL) and case-based learning (CBL).
- Teach professionalism, ethics, and psychomotor skills using appropriate instructional methods.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching sessions and incorporate feedback for improvement.
Module 2 : Curriculum development
The aim of the curriculum development module is to develop participants’ competence in the design, planning, implementation, and evaluation of outcome-based and competency-based curricula in health professions education, ensuring alignment of learning outcomes, instructional strategies, assessment methods, and educational context.
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between traditional, integrated, competency-based, and modular curricula.
- Formulate learning outcomes and educational objectives for courses/curricula using appropriate
- frameworks.
- Describe Kern’s six-step approach to curriculum development.
- Identify common challenges in curriculum implementation and propose practical solutions.
- Develop a curriculum map that aligns learning outcomes, teaching strategies, and assessment methods.
- Construct a study guide for a curriculum or course.
Mudule 3 : Assessment
To develop participants’ competence in designing, implementing, and evaluating valid and reliable assessment strategies in health professions education. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the principles of high-quality assessment for health professions education.
- Design and implement appropriate assessment methods to evaluate learner performance.
- Compare various assessment tools and select appropriate methods for assessing knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
- Develop a table of specifications – TOS to ensure alignment between learning outcomes, content areas, and assessment methods.
- Construct high-quality multiple-choice questions following item-writing guidelines

Certificate program in Health Professions Education (CHPE) of Sohail University, is an integrated program in which learners will learn about nuances of teaching and assessment of all the three domains of learning, i.e. knowledge, psychomotor skills and affects. CHPE program is one of the requirements of PMDC for promotion to a higher level. The CHPE program of JMDC is affiliated with Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU).
Rationale of Program:
The course is designed to train health professionals /teachers in basic concepts and principles of Medical Education. They will be able to demonstrate the competencies of an effective teacher/ tutor/facilitator and enhance their basic knowledge in teaching and assessment. Each such session will have tests to evaluate the level of competencies acquired. Feedback is an essential requirement for reflection and revisit of the errors.
Goal of the Program:
To train health professionals/teachers in basics concepts and principles of health Professions education and prepare them as effective members of teaching community.
It will serve as a foundation course for Junior Faculty members who wish to take up Medical Education as a career choice in future.
Some important aspects regarding the Certificate program in Health Professions Education are as follows:
- It will be a combination of interactive, face to face and online learning sessions.
- Having a student-centered learning approach, it will require maximum participation from the learners.
- Total duration of the program will be 6 months and will have 3 contact sessions, one in the first month, second after 2.5 months and third in the last month. Last contact session will be followed by examinations.
- Each contact session will be from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm for 4 days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on Fridays.
- Total contact hours will be 70 i.e. 15 CME credit hours.
- Daily schedule will be divided into 2 sessions: from 9am to 11am and 11am to 1.30 pm. with Tea Break in between and lunch at the end. Attendance will be taken at different times.
- Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory.
- Laptop will be a basic requirement for each participant throughout the session.
- Relevant material and additional resources will be shared with the participants.
Target Participants:
First session is for MBBS and BDS faculty exclusively. Teaching faculty of medical and allied health sciences i.e. medical doctors, dentists, physical therapists, pharmacists, nurses.
Eligibility for Obtaining Certificate in HPE:
Passing all the face-to-face sessions
Timely submissions of all the assignment
Obtaining minimum of 60% in aggregate score
Minimum attendance of 90% in face-to-face sessions otherwise remedial assignments have to be submitted
Pass/Fail Policy:
Any candidate obtaining less than 60% marks i.e. in the cumulative exam (40 %) and assignments (60%) will be considered as fail. There is no re sit exam. The candidate failing will have to repeat the whole program.
Breakup of marks:
End of Certificate exam: 40%
Total Assignments:60%
Each assignment per module=20%
Formative Assessment:
For Knowledge: The students will be assessed through Assignments (03) related to major/important themes.
For Skill and attitude: There will be an assessment on the ongoing small group activities, attendance and attitude of each student during the contact session. These activities will be recorded through assessment Performa based on checklists, rating scales and video recording or direct observation of their teaching sessions followed by a reflection of the participants and constructive feedback by the peers and teachers.
Summative Assessment:
- End of Certificate exam will consist of Structured Essay Questions.
- A student must attain 60% marks in aggregate to get through the program.
